Artist

Gennaro Avallone is a multidisciplinary artist. His practice spans art, sculpture, and furniture and he has collaborated on collections for tile and marble specialists. His studio is in an old salami factory in Milan.

Gennaro's stucco canvases and gilded cartigli are made in his studio. He also works closely with other specialist artisans, for example Muranese glass blowers, making him privy to materials' possibilities and limitations. His varied use of bronze in sculptures, objects, and furniture shows this well: the juxtaposition of rough and smooth surfaces, highlighting dark patination with barely polished edges, and creating forms that enhance the material with their play of light.

From a distance Gennaro's large textured canvases look as though they might be made of embossed leather. He builds up ancient and familiar motifs in stucco and uses subtle, earthy colours with areas of gilding. Multiple layers are visible which gives the feeling of age, yet the overall effect is contemporary. This paradox is Gennaro's trademark.

Gennaro is from Southern Italy and Roman, Greek and Arabic influences can be seen in his work. He is inspired by architecture and surface and is as interested in Byzantine artefacts as he is by mid 20th sculpture. He is a driven artist working on multiple projects at any one time, always looking and always experimenting.
