Artist

Mark Charlton is a mixed media artist. His studio is a few minutes' walk from his house and its huge door is always open when he is there. When the weather allows he often works outside.

To be amongst nature is essential for Mark and the shapes and textures of the natural world are what he is searching for as he works. He does not begin with an idea but develops what comes, applying and taking back as many as twenty layers of stucco and paint, each layer so thin the texture of the canvas is still visible in the finished work.

Mark’s interest in the world extends to physics and the connections between things and much of his work captures states of being with shapes that are balanced, in motion or floating.

Mark is a perfectionist, and his process is intense; when he is unsure of a piece, he will take it home in the evening to look at and then back to the studio the next day.

He is restless, and the style of his work changes frequently. Much of his studio time is spent experimenting, and progression can be seen in his work in a matter of months.

Mark is compelled to make and would not want to do anything else despite its intensity. The stillness comes when he is satisfied with his finished work. The calm is reflected in the piece, looking as though it had always been there.
